Celia Borg Cardona was born in Oxford, UK
in 1957. She grew up in Malta and has also lived for
intermittent periods in London where her interest in
art grew as a result of frequent visits to museums
and galleries there. Celia acquired formal art
training at the Malta School of Art and attended the
studio of Anton Calleja for several years. She cites
Delacroix and Whistler as artists who have
profoundly influenced the way she approaches her
art. Her concern with depicting light and shade and
her expressive gestural brushstroke stand testimony
to these influences. Oil paint is her main love but
she also works frequently in acrylics, oil pastels and
three dimensional media. She will use anything , from burnt-out
matchsticks to spilt coffee if no other medium
is
at hand . Her work has been well received when shown in solo and collective exhibitions and forms part of several
private collections.
Francesca Balzan graduated as a Legal Procurator with
a B.A. in Socio-Legal Studies in 1994. She worked for far
too long in a leading law firm, but after enrolling for art
lessons with Harry Alden she saw the light and decided to
pack in her legal career in favour of art. She has since
graduated first class with a B.A. (Hons) in History of Art,
while engaging in a four year stint at the Malta School of
Arts where she obtained a diploma in Fine Arts (Painting).
She took classes under Anton Calleja and Jason Lu and now
works in private, mainly for herself, at her home studio.
Meanwhile, she continues to research art history subjects
and will be submitting a Masters’ dissertation to the
University of Malta in the coming months. Francesca is a
board member of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts.
